Gokak

It’s almost as if the Mother Nature is washing away the dirt daubed on the face of the earth with her blustering force of waterfall. When the Ghataprabha River plunges to an impressive depth of 52 meters near Gokak, it carries the contents of a sandstone cliff, which has been stubbornly countering the force of water for time immemorial. If the Niagara Falls in US cascades down the cliff with a milky white appearance, Gokak Falls in Karnataka sometimes appears to be its younger sister; small in size, with dirt filled all over her body.

Orientation

Gokak falls is 6 kilometers away from Gokak, which is located in Belgaum district.

Weather

Normally, the weather is hot in Belgaum. The best time to visit Gokak falls is the time between July to September, when the fall is impregnated with rain and it flows majestically and colorfully.

Getting there/ Route Information

If you are travelling from Bangalore, you can take bus, train or a flight to Belgaum. Even Gokak is well connected from Belgaum and getting to Gokak from there shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Connectivity

By Buses

KSRTC has regular Rajahamsa and other types of buses plying from Bangalore to Belgaum. If you either travel by bus or by train, the journey will take more than 10 hours. Most of the buses and trains will leave Bangalore in the night and you will reach Belgaum by morning.

By other vehicles

If you are taking a private vehicle from Bangalore it will be better if you leave in the early morning. You can reach Belgaum before the dusk. Avoid night travel as much as possible as the road from Bangalore to Belgaum is full of uninhibited places. Also, it’s not safe travelling in the night.

Road Quality

You will be traveling in the national highways for most part of your journey, and hence, the road quality will be good.

Major Attractions

Chalukya Architecture

You can see the glimpses of glorious Chalukya architecture on the banks of Ghataprbha River near the falls.

Electricity Generating Station

Do not despair. This is not an ordinary Electricity Generating Station. This was built in 1880 (although many stations in India still look equally ancient!) and you have travel on a ropeway to reach the station. Interested?

Vital Tourist Information

Check out your surroundings!

Going all the way to Gokak just to see the falls may not be an earth shattering idea. So, don’t forget to check out the neighboring attractions. The food in this part of Karnataka is unique. You get Rotis made from corn and some side dishes are mouth watering. Also, do not forget to pack some Karadantu, a local sweet dish in Gokak for your family.

Hotels

There are plenty of hotels available n Belgaum to cater to your tastes and needs. There are hotels in Gokak too, although the choice is not as varied as the hotels in Belgaum.
