Mobor

Although one of its neighbors, Colva beach, hogs the share of tourists hitting the coast in and around Margao city, Mobor a relatively new discovery has now started competing for its share of the tourism pie. It gives the tourists what Colva does not… water sports. Mobor is virtually sandwiched between two water bodies; the Arabian Sea to the west and the estuary of the Assolna river behind it. Mobor is also known as the beach locale favoured by Bollywood for its shoots for its endless white stretch of sand and the easy access it provides.

Weather

Its sun, sun, sun all the way. Barring the rains, the sun is the constant feature, be it summer or winter, which is almost nonexistent. The weather pattern changes a bit only during the monsoons between mid May and September. The weather ranges from 33 degrees Celsius and hits a maximum of 39 degrees Celsius in summer.

Best time to visit:

Conventionally popular visiting months are from October to March. Some try to avoid Goa in the rains. But it’s worth a visit then too, to see the monsoons in their uninhibited glory.

Getting there / Route Information

By Bus

You’ll get buses every half an hour leaving for Mobor from the Margao bus terminus. You’ll get them both, at the old terminus (located in the city near the State Bank of India) and at the new terminus located on the outskirts of town. Bus services quite literally cease once its seven thirty. So get the first bus out of town. Mobor is about 17 km from Margao.

By Train

Trains go as far as the Margao railway station, which is the closest railhead to Mobor. Its either a bus, a pilot or an auto from there on.

Major attractions

The flat straight stretch of easily accessible beach has really spurred the growth of water-sports and adventure tourism activities in the region. You’ll find the beach dotted with private entrepreneurs making their sales pitch to you. One thing needs to be noted… none of these have licences to operate water-sports activities. Although accidents are rare, would serve you well to think before you choose an operator. Once you’ve decided, you can hop onto a jet ski, lounge on banana rides or freak out on the bump rides. You can also do some parasailing and try your hand at windsurfing if you wish to. Head a bit north along the beach itself, you’ll find another small stretch of more desolate beach which goes by the name of Fatrade.

Shopping

Rows of stalls selling trinkets and beach ware line up on the rear side of the beach. You’ll also get a lot of shell-crafted trinkets manufactured locally. Bargain hard.

Vital Tourist Information

The most preferred mode of transport is a motorcycle pilot, which are in effect two wheeler taxis, driven by licenced riders, who can transport one individual at a time.
