Yana

Seldom does nature throw its challenges in such raw but gigantic format. The monolithic rocks that block your way as soon as you set your foot in Yana challenge you to conquer them, if you can. The black rocks that that seem to have sprung from the abode of the Earth are the delight of trekkers and nature lovers. To get to Yana, you should crisscross your way through the captivatingly dense forest of Sirsi and boy! Does the sight of these monster rocks amidst such sprawling greenery take your breath away?

Orientation

Yana is around 400 kilometers from Bangalore. More realistically, it is some 40 km from Sirsi and 25 km from Kumta. After you take diversion to go to Yana, you need to go some 3-4 km to reach the destination.

Weather

The weather around Yana and Sirsi is generally cool, thanks to the flora and fauna of this area.

Getting there/ Route Information

If you are travelling from Bangalore, you can take buses to either Sirsi or Kumta. The KSRTC and countless private companies ply buses to both these towns on a daily basis

By Bus

KSRTC is game. It has innumerable buses, most of them in night, to both Sirsi and Kumta. There are other private services like VRL, Sugama and Kamat who provide good enough services.

Other Vehicles

If you are taking other four wheelers from Bangalore (bikes? Are you nuts?) There are two possible ways to reach Sirsi. You can either go via Shimoga, if you like greenery and cattle in front of your vehicle. The road via Davanagere is devoid of these natural attractions; but you will reach your destination quickly!

Road Quality

The road quality goes for a corruptive toss every rainy season, thanks to the pathetic work by the contractors on these roads.

Major Attractions

Waterfalls

If you have come all the way to either Sirsi or Kumta to watch Yana, make sure you watch other attractions such as waterfalls around Sirsi. There are innumerable waterfalls in the vicinity of this region. Make sure to check them out.

Banavasi

Banavasi is well known for its ancient architecture. If you like gaping at well carved stones without exactly knowing what they represent, hop on! The architecture here is beautiful, but there is not enough material around to enlighten you about these arts.

Vital Tourist Information

Beware of the leeches!

There are these tiny leeches that creep up your legs in the rainy season and suck your blood, without you even noticing them! Sounds creepy? Well, Yana can present lots of invisible challenges in the rainy season. The rocks are slippery, and so are the muddy roads that lead to Yana. Also, there is a small rivulet that flows just within an arm’s length of Yana rocks and guess what? The rivulet is not very welcoming to travelers!

Hotels

There are decent hotels available in both Kumta and Sirsi. Although Kumta is nearer to Yana, you better stay at Sirsi, if you plan to visit other places like Jog Falls and Banavasi.

  2. Its very-very nice blog. But Plz mention the name of the STATE & CITY,and travelling route by Transport,to arrive there. So that it will be very easy for us to go there without facing any problem.

  3. here are two ways you can get there,
    Route-1:
Take a bus from Sirsi which goes to mattighatta, devanalli via hegadekatta.Get down at a stop called “vaddi cross” and walk 6+kms from there.
    Route-2.
Take a bus either from sirsi or kumta get down at a place called Anegundi near Kathagaal. This place is after the Devimane ghats if you are coming from Sirsi. From here it is around 16kms walk. You can hire a jeep in sirsi.
Better if you take a local guide from Hegdekatta or Devenahalli.
